CHAPTER 21
STEPHAN
Sheâs amazing.
I was so tempted to take up her offer.
So tempted to leave it all behind, burn everything to the ground, and do whatever she asked.
And I was so close to telling her everything.
One look from her and Iâm utterly fucked, ready to change every plan Iâve ever made, and turn the world upside down for her.
But thereâs a job to do.
Unfinished business that canât be ignored.
I know my rejection cuts her deeply. I can smell the shame, the despair as she loses hope, and I want to rage with fury.
But I canât.
I show her the monster, the villain I need to be.
Then my phone buzzes, and sheâs running away before I can stop her.
FUCK.
Sheâs at the door, punching uselessly at the keypad as I catch up to her. âWhat the fuck are you doing?!â I roar, spinning her around to face me.
âTrying to get out of this place!â She screams, her eyes red with tears. âI canât stay here anymore, Stephan!â
âYou. Donât. Have. A. Choice.â I snarl. âYouâre mine, sweetheart.â
She grips the phone in her fist, her breath shaky as I glare at her.
âLet go of the phone, Mia.â
Her despair fills my senses, and my Alpha howls in agony.
You did this to her. You made her feel this way.
âLet go of me.â
I shake my head. âYou know I canât do that,â I murmur, pulling her closer to me.
Fuck, her scent. I could drown in her, in her taste, in her essenceâ¦
âYou keep fucking with my head,â she sobs. âI donât belong here, you know that.â
But I donât listen to her pleas.
âYour place is with me,â I whisper in her ear. âAlways.â
She sobs harder, shaking her head.
âGive me the phone, Mia.â I reach my hand down to grip hers, but her fist is wrapped tightly around the device.
âYou donât even know the password,â I murmur. âWho would you call, anyway?â
She has no one but me.
Whether she likes it or not.
âThe police, you psycho,â she says, but her voice has lost its fire, and she leans into my embrace.
Her naivety is adorable.
âAnd you donât think theyâre in our pockets? One word from me, and theyâd send you right back here.â
She doesnât let go of the phone.
âThe Collectors, then,â she tries weakly.
I chuckle. âOnce again, theyâd send you right back to me.â
I move her hair away from her neck and press my lips to her skin. âGive me back my phone, sweetheart.â
She shivers at my touch, but her hand relaxes, allowing me to grip my device. âGood girl,â I praise.
âI hate you,â she mumbles against my chest, and I stroke her hair, forcing myself to not react to her words.
âI know.â I say simply.
