CHAPTER 21

STEPHAN

She’s amazing.

I was so tempted to take up her offer.

So tempted to leave it all behind, burn everything to the ground, and do whatever she asked.

And I was so close to telling her everything.

One look from her and I’m utterly fucked, ready to change every plan I’ve ever made, and turn the world upside down for her.

But there’s a job to do.

Unfinished business that can’t be ignored.

I know my rejection cuts her deeply. I can smell the shame, the despair as she loses hope, and I want to rage with fury.

But I can’t.

I show her the monster, the villain I need to be.

Then my phone buzzes, and she’s running away before I can stop her.

FUCK.

She’s at the door, punching uselessly at the keypad as I catch up to her. “What the fuck are you doing?!” I roar, spinning her around to face me.

“Trying to get out of this place!” She screams, her eyes red with tears. “I can’t stay here anymore, Stephan!”

“You. Don’t. Have. A. Choice.” I snarl. “You’re mine, sweetheart.”

She grips the phone in her fist, her breath shaky as I glare at her.

“Let go of the phone, Mia.”

Her despair fills my senses, and my Alpha howls in agony.

You did this to her. You made her feel this way.

“Let go of me.”

I shake my head. “You know I can’t do that,” I murmur, pulling her closer to me.

Fuck, her scent. I could drown in her, in her taste, in her essence…

“You keep fucking with my head,” she sobs. “I don’t belong here, you know that.”

But I don’t listen to her pleas.

“Your place is with me,” I whisper in her ear. “Always.”

She sobs harder, shaking her head.

“Give me the phone, Mia.” I reach my hand down to grip hers, but her fist is wrapped tightly around the device.

“You don’t even know the password,” I murmur. “Who would you call, anyway?”

She has no one but me.

Whether she likes it or not.

“The police, you psycho,” she says, but her voice has lost its fire, and she leans into my embrace.

Her naivety is adorable.

“And you don’t think they’re in our pockets? One word from me, and they’d send you right back here.”

She doesn’t let go of the phone.

“The Collectors, then,” she tries weakly.

I chuckle. “Once again, they’d send you right back to me.”

I move her hair away from her neck and press my lips to her skin. “Give me back my phone, sweetheart.”

She shivers at my touch, but her hand relaxes, allowing me to grip my device. “Good girl,” I praise.

“I hate you,” she mumbles against my chest, and I stroke her hair, forcing myself to not react to her words.

“I know.” I say simply.
